Before looking ahead to New Jersey’s long-term clean energy goals, families are already receiving direct relief on their energy bills. The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) has approved a Residential Universal Bill Credit, delivering a $100 credit to all 3.9 million residential electric customers served by PSE&G, Atlantic City Electric, Jersey Central Power & Light, and Rockland Electric Company.
The credit will be applied automatically, appearing as two $50 installments on September and October bills, to help households manage costs during the year’s highest-demand months. This initiative is part of a broader $430 million relief package designed to ease the burden of rising electricity costs tied to the PJM cost crisis.
Big changes are coming to New Jersey’s energy future. Governor Phil Murphy recently signed two major pieces of legislation that will nearly double the state’s clean energy capacity by 2030 while also tackling the rising cost of electricity for families and businesses.

What the New Laws Do
Community Solar Expansion (S4530/A5768): This law directs the NJ Board of Public Utilities to open registration for 3,000 megawatts of new community solar projects starting this fall. That expansion will extend solar access to 450,000 more New Jerseyans, including 250,000 low-income families. By 2028, the program will provide the equivalent of 1 million households with clean, affordable solar power.
Energy Storage Growth (A5267/S4289): This law establishes a program to install 2,000 megawatts of energy storage by 2030. Large-scale battery storage means New Jersey can store energy when demand (and costs) are low, then release it when demand spikes. This helps stabilize the grid, prevent blackouts, and lower overall costs for customers.
Why It Matters
Together, these laws will:
- Reduce utility bill pressures for families statewide
- Make clean energy more accessible to low- and moderate-income households
- Strengthen the power grid against outages and extreme weather
- Create new union jobs in clean energy industries
- Keep New Jersey a national leader in renewable energy and energy affordability
How This Connects to GreenLife’s Mission

Looking Ahead
Governor Murphy called these bills “far-reaching steps to lower energy costs for every household in New Jersey.” By expanding renewable power and building smarter storage, the state is making sure energy is not only cleaner but also more affordable and reliable for everyone.
