Top Mistakes Homeowners Make With Their AC

Air conditioning is one of those home systems that most people don’t think much about until something goes wrong. And by then, the small habits and choices that quietly damaged the system over months or years are already baked in. Whether it’s a $1,500 repair bill, a system that needs replacement years earlier than expected, or just a summer of high bills and uneven cooling, the underlying causes are usually the same set of avoidable mistakes.

If you can identify which of these common pitfalls apply to your own household, you’ll be in a much better position to keep your AC running efficiently, and to extend the life of an expensive piece of equipment.

Mistake #1: Skipping Filter Changes

This is the single most common AC mistake, and it’s also the easiest to fix. Air filters trap dust, pollen, pet hair, and other particles before they reach the indoor coil and circulate through your home. When the filter clogs, airflow drops, the system has to run longer to deliver the same cooling, and dust starts collecting on the evaporator coil itself, which is much harder and more expensive to clean.

Energy efficiency installation

For most New Jersey homes, the right cadence is every 1 to 3 months during cooling season. Households with pets, smokers, allergy sufferers, or heavy foot traffic should err toward the shorter end. A simple calendar reminder is all it takes, and a pack of basic 1-inch filters costs less than a dinner out.

Mistake #2: Setting the Thermostat Too Low

When the indoors feels warm, the natural instinct is to crank the thermostat down to 68 or 70 degrees. The problem is that an air conditioner doesn’t cool a room “faster” by being set lower, it just keeps running until it hits whatever target you’ve set. Setting the thermostat to 68 instead of 75 doesn’t speed up cooling; it just costs you significantly more in energy and equipment wear.

The DOE’s recommendation of 78 degrees while you’re home and 7 to 10 degrees higher when you’re away is rooted in real efficiency math. Every degree below 78 typically adds about 3 percent to your cooling costs, and the cumulative impact over a long summer is significant.

Mistake #3: Closing Vents in Unused Rooms

It seems intuitive: if a room isn’t being used, why pay to cool it? Unfortunately, closing supply vents in central HVAC systems doesn’t save energy the way most people assume. Modern central air conditioners are sized to push a specific volume of air through the entire ductwork system. When you block off some of those outlets, pressure builds up in the ducts, airflow becomes unbalanced, and the system works harder while cooling less effectively.

Old vs new AC unit comparison

Closed vents can also lead to duct leakage, frozen evaporator coils, and premature blower motor failure. If certain rooms genuinely don’t need cooling, the right solution is zoning controls, not closed registers.

Mistake #4: Ignoring the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor condenser is exposed to weather, vegetation, and debris year-round. When grass clippings, leaves, dirt, and pollen accumulate on the coils, the system can’t reject heat efficiently, which means longer run times and higher bills. We’ve seen condensers in New Jersey backyards completely engulfed by overgrown shrubs, with maybe four inches of clearance instead of the recommended two feet on all sides.

A few minutes every spring and fall is all it takes: trim back vegetation, clear away debris, and gently rinse the unit with a garden hose. If the fins are bent or damaged, a professional can comb them straight to restore airflow.

Mistake #5: Skipping Annual Maintenance

Most homeowners would never skip oil changes on their car, but many treat their AC like an appliance that takes care of itself. The reality is that an air conditioner has dozens of moving and electrical components, capacitors, contactors, motors, fans, refrigerant lines, drain pans, that gradually degrade and benefit from professional inspection.

A skipped tune-up doesn’t just mean slightly higher bills. It means small problems compound over time, often catastrophically. A worn capacitor that costs $40 to replace during a tune-up can take out a $700 compressor when it finally fails. ENERGY STAR estimates that maintained systems use 5 to 15 percent less energy than neglected ones, and they last considerably longer.

Mistake #6: Buying the Wrong Size System

When it’s time to replace an AC, many homeowners assume “bigger is better.” It isn’t. An oversized air conditioner cools the air quickly but shuts off before it has time to remove humidity from the home. The result is a house that hits its set temperature but still feels clammy and uncomfortable, and the rapid on-off cycling, called short-cycling, accelerates wear on the compressor.

Properly sizing a new system requires a Manual J load calculation, which considers your home’s square footage, insulation, window orientation, ductwork, and other factors. Reputable HVAC contractors will perform this calculation. Avoid anyone who quotes you a system size based purely on square footage rules of thumb.

Mistake #7: Using AC to Compensate for Other Problems

If your home is uncomfortable in summer, the instinct is to turn the AC down further. But often the real issue isn’t the AC itself, it’s air leaks letting hot, humid outdoor air infiltrate the house, missing or compressed insulation, or sun pouring through unshaded windows. Asking your air conditioner to overcome those problems is expensive and often unsuccessful, because the moisture and heat just keep coming in.

Addressing the root causes, sealing leaks, upgrading insulation, managing solar heat gain, usually delivers better comfort than any thermostat adjustment ever could.
